Comments

Lateral stakes can be put into horizontal position. Spoke wheels ⌀ 11, insufficient. In addition, for the time of release of this wagon (1967/68), it is unlikely that it was equipped with spoke wheels, anyway ugly and therefore to change!

Dark brown colour not matching the UIC red, but perhaps voluntary to evoke a used wagon. As for the others, the chassis stiffeners present details which don’t exist on the French type, to eliminate.

According to Ferrovissime Special Issue No. 5, issued in 2016, the wagon No. 01 87 332 3076-9 belongs to the sub-series 01 87 332 3 000 to 4 099, built between 1967 and 1968. This is the last sub-series.

Hard plastic box bigger and bigger! With still no way to put away the wagon equipped with its stakes (thermoforming suggests an axle transport version).

See Loco-Revue forum.

Modifications

  • ⌀ 11.4 wheels mounted on Roco axles. Buffers, steps, brake blocks, and floor painted. Chassis stiffeners rectified. Plates and stakes glued with Kristal Klear, except for lower plates glued with Kibri glue for plastic models.
  • SMD five-spoke brake wheels mounted (soldered on bronze axle) to replace the original four-spoke brake wheels.
  • Busch caravans installed.

History

Wagons put into service from 1954 to 1968. UIC registration 01 (Europ) or 21 (RIV) 87 330 0 000 to 332 4 999. Some are equipped with a screw brake on gangway, others with a brake wheel accessible from the ground.

Main characteristics (with / without gangway): tare 12.8 t / 11.9 t; C load: 21 t / 28 t; usable length 12.5 m; usable width 2.77 m. Folding sides and ends. Manufacturers: Coder, Frangeco, Decauville.

Flat wagons of the UIC type are subdivided into two sub-series of which I don’t know the precise differences of construction:

  • the UIC/ORE standard (code Ks 5.01), built from 1954 to 1963, in about 10,000 units. The wagons with brake bridge are in this series;
  • the UIC unified (code Ks 5.02), built from 1963 to 1968, in about 12,000 units.

These many wagons will become surplus in the 1970s, which will lead to many transformations: container transport, various service wagons.

Besides, there is a rather surprising coincidence: the perfect adaptation of the usable dimensions of this wagon to those of 40-foot ISO containers (12.2 × 2.4 m compared to 12.5 × 2.77 m), which will only appear 10 years later!
