Comments

About registration, the HJ4004 coach is marked A5r, but it is in fact an A5rt with central corridor. The HJ4102 is correctly marked.

Bogies Y20. The wheels, very bright, are 10.2 mm dia. (should be 10.6 to scale) and have 1 mm flanges. They are isolated by sleeve on the axle. The axles are 23.8 mm long.

The coach is too high by at least 0.5 mm. Beware of the bosses on the bogies, under the drawbars, which serve to limit the rotation of the bogies, and which could lean against the chassis.

No spare part provided!

What has been said above is valid for reference 4102-1 released in 2019. Here is what has changed:

The mould seems worn, some details are stuck, there are defects on the roof.

The bogies and the chassis were fitted with dynamo, brake linkage, air tank and cylinder.

No more sleeve on axles.

The interior, white, has red inserted seats.

The pivoting of the bogies is bad; it will be improved by shortening the pivots.

See:

Modifications

  • Chassis lowered by 0,8 mm by milling the bogie pivots. Coupling boxes shortened by 1 mm.
  • 2-point suspension wedges to the end opposite to generator.

HJ4004

  • Chassis and interior fittings rectified (they were distorted because of a bad assembly). Interior fittings painted, white headrests on seats. Bar fitted (copper top, tablet). Chassis, buffers, and electric heating cables painted.
  • Lighting powered by conductive bearings and controlled by latching reed switch.

HJ4102-1

  • Interior fittings painted, white headrests on seats. Bar fitted (top “stainless steel”), bottom painted Humbrol natural wood No. 110).
  • Lighting powered by wires wrapped on the axles and controlled by latching reed switch.

History

These two coaches belong to the series of seven coaches numbered 51 87 84-87 011-6 to 017-3 (U56) put into service from 1957, completed with six coaches U64 51 87 84-87 (or 80) 029-5 to 035-5, the last being equipped with UIC rubber joints.

The HJ4004 model belonged to the Sud-Ouest Region in 1970 (source: Le Train, Les archives de la DEV, page 83), then to the Sud-Est Region in 1978 (source: SNCF document published by eurocity64). The HJ4102 belonged to the Nord Region in 1970. The original bogies are Y20H, often later replaced with Y24Z.

Note: the Paris-Lille “telephone” fast trains were composed of these four types of coaches. Typical composition: three or four A9j, one A5rtj (bar + telephone), one A9tj, one A6rtj (restaurant coach), one A9tj, and one Dd4s luggage van.

There is no A6rtj restaurant coach model currently available.
